Shinji Kawabata has been involved in a number of research projects related to his main interest, Boron Neutron Capture Therapy. This has resulted in research and review articles that have been cited in many papers. Dr Kawabata has had a very productive research career. He and his colleagues have the most clinical experience of any group in the world in treating patients with either high-grade gliomas or aggressive meningiomas using BNCT. Dr Kawabata is both an outstanding basic researcher and clinical neurosurgeon who treats patients with highly aggressive brain tumours, gliomas, meningiomas, metastatic lesions and lymphomas using multimodality treatments including radiation and/or chemotherapy. His clinical team has taken BNCT to a new level by using an accelerator neutron source to evaluate BNCT. The preliminary clinical results are the best ever achieved by any group using BNCT to treat patients with high-grade gliomas and will hopefully significantly advance BNCT as a cancer treatment modality. In summary, Dr Kawabata is well versed in radiotherapy for brain tumours and is a talented, highly dedicated neurosurgeon and clinician scientist who has made very important contributions to the advancement of BNCT for the treatment of brain tumours.
