Registration for the 5th edition of the International Conference „Cosmology School – Introduction to Cosmology” co-organized by the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCNR) has started. The conference has already become part of the schedule of Polish astrophysical scientific events and is recognized in the arena of cosmological conferences worldwide.

Cosmology School is the only school held in Poland addressed to young astronomers and physicists interested in observational cosmology. The formula of the school combines both lectures, practical workshops and student sessions. Lecture sessions will introduce theoretical foundations of the issues considered by cosmologists, but most lectures will focus on observational studies. Results of the latest research, conducted within the framework of international projects in which Polish centres also participate, will be presented. During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to work with real observational data, learning how to use tools used by scientists for their analysis, searching astronomical databases and working with large datasets within the Virtual Observatory (VO) workshop and modelling spectral energy distributions. Workshops on cosmological computer simulations – an important tool to test various theories and compare theory with observations – are also planned. As part of the student sessions, participants will have the opportunity to present the results of their own research. The topics of the School cover a wide range of issues: from the microwave background radiation, through the cosmic web of the large-scale structure of the Universe, to the evolution of galaxies and their active nuclei. There will also be dark matter and dark energy, as well as gravitational waves.

The school continues the tradition of the Cracow Cosmological Schools, the first of which, under the name „Summer School of the Theory of Relativity and Cosmology”, was organised by Professors Jan Kubikowski and Andrzej Zięba from Wrocław. Since then, cosmological schools have been held every two years, and the subject matter of each school has focused on specific issues. The main organisers of the Schools were: Prof. Andrzej Zięba, Prof. Michał Heller, Prof. Marek Demiański, Prof. Piotr Flin and Prof. Konrad Rudnicki. Apart from educational and scientific values, Summer Schools of Cosmology fulfilled other important tasks.

"The main objective of the Krakow Cosmological Schools was the integration of the cosmological community – observers and theorists” – says Prof. Marek Jamrozy of the Astronomical Observatory of the Jagiellonian University (JU). "Their fruit was the establishment of the Kraków Cosmology Group, and they also initiated the publication of the cosmology journal Acta Cosmologica. Unfortunately, at the end of the 1980 s and the beginning of the 1990 s, the Schools underwent a regression. The 12th edition was only national in scope, with Polish as the language of the School, and lasted only four days, with only 8 participants. It was therefore almost four times less numerous than the first school, which took place in Opole. The 13th School took place in Łódź (September 1992) under the name „Progress in new Cosmologies” and, surprisingly, was a record-breaking one in terms of the number of participants – 108, from 11 countries. The School was headed by Halton Arp. The 15th and last Cracow Cosmological School took place in July 1996 in Łódź. Thus ended the almost thirty-year history of Cosmological Schools in the 20th century.”

"Building on the achievements of older and younger generations of Polish cosmologists, ’Cosmology Schools’ aim at reintegrating the community of Polish observational cosmologists, marking their role on the international arena and educating new generations of young cosmologists so that today – as in the past – we can once again speak of a Polish cosmology school” – adds Prof. Agnieszka Pollo, Head of the NCNR Department of Astrophysics and Chair of the Scientific Organising Committee of the Conference.

During the conference, it will be possible to meet and listen to lectures by world specialists, among others, Prof. John Peacock (University of Edinburgh), Prof. Rien van de Weijgaert (University of Groningen), Dr Clotilde Laigle (Institut d’astrophysique de Paris) or Prof. Bohdan Novosyadlyi (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv). Polish specialists will also be present – lectures have been announced by, among others, Prof. Marek Demiański of Warsaw University and Prof. Lech Sokołowski of Jagiellonian University. Workshops will be conducted, among others, by Dr Hendrik Heinl, VO specialist from the CDS, computer simulation specialist – Prof. Wojciech Hellwing from the Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Katarzyna Małek from the NCNR Department of Astrophysics, who specialises, among others, in modelling the spectral energy distribution of galaxies. Observation workshops are also planned. They are primarily aimed at theoreticians, so that they have the opportunity – perhaps for the first time in their lives – to try their hand at a telescope.

Following the example of previous editions of the conference, also this year there will be open popular science lectures, to which the organisers cordially invite all enthusiasts of astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. To meet the expectations of the audience, this year as many as two open lectures are planned. One lecture in Polish will be given by Prof. Marek Demiański, while the other, in English, will be given by Prof. Rien van de Weijgaert.

This will be the fifth edition of the conference in the series „Cosmology School – Introduction to Cosmology”. It will be held, as in 2017 and 2018, at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. The conference organisers are: Astronomical Observatory of the Jagiellonian University, the National Centre for Nuclear Research, the Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Jan Kochanowski University, the Polish Astronomical Society and the Cracow Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka.

The organisers invite you to follow the conference website, also on social media, and to look at the School’s YouTube channel, where you can find, among other things, recordings of lectures from previous editions of the School.

The conference will take place from 16.07.2022 to 31.07.2022.

Registration will be open from 01.03.2022 to 31.05.2022.
