The AQURE accelerator presented at the Congress of the Polish Society of Medical Physics
06-10-2026
From 30 September to 3 October 2026, during the 19th Congress of the Polish Society of Medical Physics (PTFM) in Gdańsk, AQURE was presented to the general public for the first time – a mobile intraoperative accelerator, the result of collaboration between the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) and the Wielkopolska Oncology Centre in Poznań (WCO).
The Congress of the Polish Society for Medical Physics is the most important scientific and educational event for the Polish medical physics community. This year’s edition brought together specialists from clinical practice, clinical and basic research, as well as representatives from academia and the medical sector. The event provided an opportunity to present the latest scientific and technological achievements, exchange experiences and discuss the future of medical physics.
One of the highlights of the NCBJ’s presence at the congress was the presentation of the AQURE accelerator at its stand. For the first time, attendees were able to view the device in the form of a 1:3 scale 3D model, as well as speak directly with representatives of the team involved in the development of AQURE.
AQURE was manufactured at the Department of Nuclear Equipment HITEC (ZdAJ) at the NCBJ and was developed in close collaboration with the Wielkopolska Oncology Centre in Poznań. The collaboration between the research centre and its clinical partner has enabled the scientific and engineering expertise of the NCBJ to be combined with the Wielkopolska Oncology Centre’s many years of experience in the application of intraoperative therapy. The result of this collaboration is an accelerator designed for intraoperative radiotherapy, offering high performance parameters and technical solutions tailored to the needs and working comfort of its end-users.
The NCBJ stand was represented by Marcin Żurawek and Joanna Walkiewicz from the Department of Nuclear Equipment HITEC, who demonstrated the device and answered participants’ questions regarding its design, capabilities and development process.
AQURE was also featured in the congress’s scientific programme. Aleksandra Lenartowicz-Gasik delivered a paper entitled "Direct characterisation of the energy spectrum of electron beams from the AQURE intraoperative accelerator and UHDR beams", presenting issues related to the characterisation of electron beams.
Agnieszka Misiarz’s presentation, “From concept to implementation of a medical product in a hospital”, also addressed the subject of AQURE and its development process. The presentation outlined the path a medical solution must take from the technology development stage to its preparation for practical application.
The congress programme also included a presentation by Jakub Ośko entitled "Internal exposure to ionising radiation – biological monitoring and dose assessment".
The presentation of AQURE at the 19th PTFM Congress was a key moment in raising awareness of the solution developed through collaboration between the NCBJ and the WCO. The opportunity to showcase the device to a wide audience of specialists not only allowed us to present the results of our research and engineering work, but also to initiate a broader discussion on the potential applications of modern technologies in intraoperative radiotherapy.
The NCBJ’s participation in the congress was also an opportunity to demonstrate how collaboration between science, engineering and clinical practice can lead from an idea to a finished solution that meets the needs of modern medicine.
