Student internship | STE-EU-SCALE_UZ3_436

Termin zbierania ofert: 08-10-2025

The National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) is inviting applications for a position

Student internship
 ref. STE-EU-SCALE_101

Location: Otwock - Świerk - in the outskirts of Warsaw with daily transport services provided.

The position will be funded within the project titled ”A Probabilistic Inverse Model for Identifying the Source of Atmospheric Contamination on a Continental Scale” funding under the prestigious SONATA 20 competition organized by the National Science Centre (NCN). The Principal Investigator is Dr. Eng. Piotr Kopka, email: Piotr.Kopka@ncbj.gov.pl

Project description The project aims to develop a new class of inverse Bayesian models called STE-EU-SCALE (Source Term Estimation for European-Scale), enabling the identification of source terms on a continental scale. The innovative aspects include the use of a new forward atmospheric dispersion model, machine learning techniques (e.g., JRODOS-MATCH, surrogate models based on Neural Networks), and Kubernetes architecture for distributed computing. The method will be validated with real event data and will provide faster and more accurate reconstructions of past and potential emergency releases, supported by the European Radiological Data Exchange Platform (EURDEP).

Job/tasks description:

  • Assist in developing datasets related to radionuclide releases (e.g., Ru-106, Se-75, Nordic Sea releases).
  • Prepare datasets for inverse simulations and model validation.
  • Gain hands-on experience with nuclear physics and chemistry.
  • Support research on gamma radiation measurement techniques and data analysis.

Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of nuclear physics and chemistry.
  • Familiarity with gamma radiation measurement techniques.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, and analytical thinking skills.
  • Ability to prepare and organize datasets and support model validation.
  • Student status (of undergraduate or graduate studies in Poland).

Required documents:

  • CV with a clause: "I consent to the processing of my personal data contained in my job application for the purposes necessary to carry out the recruitment process"
  • Cover letter (1 page)
  • Copy of the current student ID or a certificate of enrollment

We offer:

  • student internship (partially remote).
  • Duration: 3 months.
  • Salary: 3000 PLN gross per month.
  • Collaboration within an international research team and the opportunity to participate in conferences.
  • Access to modern research facilities at NCBJ.

Scholarship start: November 2025.
