Localization: National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ), ul. Andrzeja Sołtana 7, 05-400 Otwock, Poland

NOMATEN Centre of Excellence is formed through a partnership between NCBJ (Poland), CEA (France) and VTT (Finland) with joint financial support from the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) and the European Commission. NOMATEN focuses research on the characterization, analysis and development of advanced multifunctional materials, specifically those designed to work in extreme conditions, with primary examples being radiation, high temperature and corrosion. The position will be funded under the project titled "Designing Improved Metallic Glasses", led by Dr. Silvia Bonfanti (grant no. FENG.02.02-IP.05-0177/23), carried out within the FIRST TEAM program of the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP), financed by the European Funds for a Modern Economy (FENG).

The initial employment period will be for six months, with the position subject to renewal annually based on the candidate's progress.

The project implementation period is from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2028.

    Requirements:

    • Master in Science and Engineering, Master in Physics or Material Science

    We are seeking a candidate with expertise in additive manufacturing of metallic glasses. The primary topics of this position include: 
    - Literature review and production of new metallic glasses using techniques like suction casting
    - 3D printing of novel metallic glass compositions with high glass-forming ability
    - Investigating the fundamental mechanisms of 3D printing by integrating computational simulations, machine learning, and experimental data.
    - Exploring innovative 3D printing methods and techniques to minimize crack formation and porosity

    We are particularly interested in the 3D printing of complex metallic glasses.  Some recent example publications are: Phys. Rev. Research 4 (2022), arXiv:2501.00589, Materials Today Advances 16 (2022), Progress in Additive Manufacturing (2025). 

    Background: We are seeking a candidate with a solid background in Additive Manufacturing (AM), Material Development for AM, and metallic glasses. 

    Plus:

    • Experience with Additive Manufacturing - Material Development for AM - Mechanical Tests -Chemical elemental analysis - Geometrical, Material and Production-Process analysis of PCBs, DCBs, Chips and EMCs - Alloy Development with Arc melting, Melt Spinning, Suction Casting.
    • Documented experience in experimental work with metallic glasses, including working on theses related to the topic.
    • An international background, with demonstrated experience collaborating with research teams or institutions in Europe and globally.
    • fluent English, spoken and written, enabling efficient communication and preparation of scien-tific articles;
    • strong motivation for scientific work and assimilation of new knowledge and technical skills;
    • good interpersonal and communication skills, to be able to work in a multi-cultural  environment both independently and as a part of a team.

    Description of task:

    The candidate will be responsible for the development and optimization of metallic glasses, particu-larly focusing on 3D printing techniques.

    The primary tasks include:

    • Producing novel metallic glass compositions using different experimental methods.
    • Performing 3D printing of metallic glasses with high glass-forming ability. Optimizing printing techniques to prevent defects such as cracks and porosity.
    • Analyzing the fundamental mechanisms behind 3D printing of metallic glasses, integrating computational simulations, machine learning, and experimental data.
    • Collaborating with international research teams and participating in regular visits to partner institutions.
    • Contributing to the publication of research findings in high-impact journals.
    • Filing up to three patents related to the innovative findings within the project.

    Gross Salary: 

    11 800 PLN per month (at current exchange rate 2 700€ per month); the details in each case depend on qualifications and experience, and the compensation is composed of the base salary, seniority addition, functional addition and project bonus)
