Today in Gdynia, during the opening of the Military Electronics Centre, a cooperation agreement was signed between the National Centre for Nuclear Research and OBR CTM SA (Research and Development Centre for Maritime Technology SA), which is part of the Polish Defence Group.

The agreement was signed by Prof. Jakub Kupecki, Director of the NCBJ, and Marcin Wiśniewski, Chairman of OBR CTM SA.

The event brought together representatives of the Polish and American defence sectors, as well as representatives of the central government. The NCBJ was represented at the event by the Institute’s Director, Prof. Jakub Kupecki, and the Director of the Department of Nuclear Techniques and Equipment, Prof. Jacek Rzadkiewicz.

The cooperation concerns the development of technologies of key importance to the security and defence of the Republic of Poland, taking into account strategic and critical infrastructure, in the following areas:

  • programmes and projects;
  • situational awareness, reconnaissance and monitoring;
  • research, development and technology transfer;
  • competence development, standardisation and promotion.

As PGZ CEO Adam Leszkiewicz emphasised during the event, the presence of the Polish Space Agency and the National Centre for Nuclear Research was no coincidence.

“As an organisation actively involved in the development of dual-use and defence technologies, our Institute is sending a clear message today: we are presenting our offering and forging partnerships that will genuinely serve to strengthen Poland’s defence capabilities,” emphasised the Director of the NCBJ.

The National Centre for Nuclear Research is Poland’s largest research institute, responsible for operating the country’s only nuclear reactor. The NCBJ has been the site of the largest infrastructure projects in Polish science over the past 50 years. The Centre carries out 150 projects annually, whilst the NCBJ’s services, technologies and products are supplied to over 80 countries. The institute employs 1,150 people and is directly involved in the energy transition and the development of techniques to enhance operational safety and ensure the continuity of strategic and critical infrastructure. In this area, the NCBJ is, amongst other things, coordinating the WEKTOR project (2024–2028) entitled "Detection and countermeasures against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using a high-power microwave (HPM) pulse generator with directional emission". The project is funded by the National Centre for Research and Development and was submitted under call for proposals No. 12/2022 (Round 2) for the implementation of scientific research and development projects in the field of national defence and security. https://www.ncbj.gov.pl/
