A meeting was held at the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) between NCBJ representatives and Prof. Kirk Atkinson from Ontario Tech University (OTU) — one of Canada’s leading universities developing expertise for the nuclear energy sector and SMR technologies. The meeting was a planned return visit by the Canadian delegation to Poland, following last year’s meeting involving NCBJ representatives at OTU laboratories.
Participants in the meeting included Prof. Jakub Kupecki, Director of NCBJ; Dr. Jakub Ośko, Head of the Dosimetry Measurements Laboratory; and Prof. Agnieszka Korgul of the University of Warsaw — coordinators of the NCBJ and University of Warsaw postgraduate programme “Nuclear Technologies.”
The discussions continued talks on a joint development programme that began in November last year in Canada during a delegation of the Polish Ministry of Energy involving representatives of the Polish research and academic community. This marks another step in building bilateral cooperation between NCBJ and Ontario Tech University, as well as efforts to establish Polish-Canadian research programmes dedicated to the nuclear sector.
The development and maintenance of the pace of nuclear energy deployment in Poland requires building lasting partnerships that combine technology improvement and development, research, science, and education. The role of the National Centre for Nuclear Research is not only to develop technologies and conduct research, but also to create a strong competence base for the entire nuclear sector. This is why international partnerships and the development of modern educational programmes that address the real needs of the market, industry, and future nuclear investments in Poland are so important. We cooperate with the best institutions, drawing on their experience and long-standing practices, and OTU is precisely such an institution,” emphasized the Director of NCBJ.
He also added that the development of the nuclear sector requires a long-term approach and consistent investment in human resources, competencies, and international cooperation, which will support the creation of a strong nuclear technology ecosystem in Poland.
Ontario Tech University is one of the key institutions supporting the nuclear sector in Canada.
Expanding international cooperation and building a modern education system for nuclear energy professionals is one of the important elements of NCBJ’s activities supporting the development of the nuclear sector in Poland. This forms part of the Institute’s internationalization strategy.
