At the beginning of March, a meeting entitled “How Prepared is our Union for Nuclear Disaster? European Perspectives on Radiological Emergency Preparedness and Response” was held at the European Parliament in Brussels, devoted to European readiness for radiological and nuclear hazards. The event was attended by representatives of the Hazard Analysis Centre (MANHAZ) at the National Centre for Nuclear Research – dr Sławomir Potempski, head of the centre, and dr Anna Wawrzyńczak-Szaban.

During the keynote session, dr Sławomir Potempski presented Poland's perspective on readiness for radiation incidents and the role of risk analysis and scientific research in supporting emergency response systems. The panel also included experts from European nuclear safety institutions, including dr Florian Rauser from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) in Germany and dr Géraldine Pina from the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (ASNR) in France.

The discussion focused on the challenges posed by growing radiological and nuclear risks in the context of the current geopolitical situation and on the role of scientific research and international cooperation in building Europe's resilience to such events.

The meeting was organised by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) as part of the PIANOFORTE partnership and was held under the patronage of MEP Lena Düpont.
