The award recognises outstanding contributions to nuclear research and education and a passion for inspiring new generations of students and scientists.
The Borelius Medal is a distinction established in 1998 by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), awarded annually to scientists for outstanding contributions to engineering physics at the university. This year's Medal was awarded to Prof. Wacław Gudowski, creator of the Master's programme in Nuclear Energy Engineering at the Stockholm Institute. The award recognises Prof. Gudowski's contribution to the education of new generations of nuclear engineers.
Wacław Gudowski is a professor of Reactor Physics and Neutron Physics at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. He is the long-time director of the Centre for Nuclear Energy (CEKERT) at KTH, a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, and a professor at the National Centre for Nuclear Research. He is the author of more than 90 scientific publications in nuclear engineering and solid state physics, and is one of the European pioneers of research on transmutation of waste and nuclear materials in accelerator-driven/controlled systems - ADS. Prof Gudowski is also involved in non-proliferation issues. He is currently involved in the Polish nuclear power programme.
