New NCBJ textbook on theory of the atomic nuclei
27-08-2025
Scientists from the National Centre for Nuclear Research are authors not only of articles published in prestigious journals, but also of textbooks. The book Theory of Atomic Nuclei, written by Prof. Krzysztof Pomorski from the NCBJ Theoretical Physics Division and Prof. Bożena Nerlo-Pomorska from Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, has just been published. The printed version of the textbook will be available from 16 September.
The new textbook Theory of Atomic Nuclei – Foundations covers the main topics in the theory of atomic nuclei, which make up 99.975% of the total mass of an atom. The publication presents selected topics in nuclear physics in the context of their historical development and evolution towards more complex theories. These form the basis of contemporary knowledge about atomic nuclei. The new textbook provides an accessible and concise introduction to the structure of the atomic nucleus. The work is aimed at master's students of physics, nuclear science and nuclear engineering, as well as doctoral students and researchers involved in nuclear physics. The knowledge contained in it will allow readers to independently explore contemporary theories and models of the atomic nucleus.
Both Prof. Krzysztof Pomorski and Prof. Bożena Nerlo-Pomorska specialise in the theory of the atomic nucleus and nuclear reactions. Together, they are graduates of the Doctoral Programme at the Institute of Nuclear Research (now NCBJ). A significant part of the material contained in the textbook is based on the knowledge that the authors acquired during lectures given by eminent professors at the IBJ and during their subsequent collaboration with them. - The structure of the textbook is based on many years of experience gained while lecturing at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, doctoral schools in France, the Czech Republic and China, and numerous thematic seminars. We have both educated dozens of masters and doctors specialising in theoretical nuclear physics, so we already have some experience - says Prof. Krzysztof Pomorski. The book, published by the prestigious CRC Press publishing house, will benefit future generations of students and researchers in the field of nuclear physics.
