Assistant professor

NOMATEN Centre of Excellence (NCBJ)

nr ref. NOMATEN_386

Localization: National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ), ul. Andrzeja Sołtana 7, 05-400 Otwock, Poland
(Suburb of Warsaw, efficient and free daily bus transport service provided).

NOMATEN Centre of Excellence is formed through a partnership between NCBJ (Poland), CEA (France) and VTT (Finland) with joint financial support from the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) and the European Commission. NOMATEN focuses research on the characterization, analysis and development of advanced multifunctional materials, specifically those designed to work in extreme conditions, with primary examples being radiation, high temperature and corrosion. More about NOMATEN CoE and the detailed project descriptions at http://nomaten.ncbj.gov.pl.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in computational materials science to join our research team. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting advanced multiscale modeling studies, with a focus on catalysis and the functional behavior of doped organic nanostructured 2D materials.

Description of task:

  • Perform DFT and self-consistent-charge DFTB+ simulations to investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of complex catalytic systems and 2D materials.
  • Conduct large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using ReaxFF and machine learning-based force fields to study dynamic processes at the atomic scale.
  • Design and implement multiscale modeling workflows that bridge different simulation methods (DFT, DFTB+, MD, CPD modeling) to achieve comprehensive insights into material behavior under working conditions.
  • Investigate the electronic and optical properties of doped organic nanostructured materials with potential catalytic or functional applications.
  • Actively collaborate with experimental research teams to interpret results and co-design computational-experimental campaigns.
  • Develop and optimize computational workflows and protocols to ensure reproducibility, scalability, and integration with high-performance computing resources.
  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific publications, technical reports, and grant proposals.

Requirements:

  • PhD in physics, mathematics, materials engineering, or related fields.
  • Proven expertise in DFT, DFTB+, and ReaxFF-based MD simulations, especially in the context of catalysis and nanomaterials.
Strong background in multiscale modeling approaches and computational workflow development.
  • Demonstrated experience in studying 2D materials for catalytic applications.
  • Ability to collaborate efficiently with experimental groups and work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Prior experience working in international and collaborative research environments.

Additional assets:

  • Scientific experience confirmed by authorship/co-authorship of at least 12 scientific publications, participation in conferences, and involvement in the activities of scientific organizations.
  • Knowledge of issues related to the formation of radiation-induced defects in nuclear materials.

We offer:

  • Work in international networks with research institutes and industrial companies.
  • Access to the research potential of NOMATEN’s three partners between NCBJ (Poland), CEA (France) and VTT (Finland) and other scientific partners.
  • Travel funds for participation in conferences and collaboration, attractive working conditions, atmosphere of teamwork, family-friendly environment with flexible working hours. support of an experienced local team in legal, financial and organisational issues as well as logistic support and advice related to working in Poland - enabling smooth relocation and equal opportunities.

Required documents:

  • Cover letter that explains the motivating factors for considering the position (max. 1 pp)
  • CV with complete publication list
  • Brief description of important scientific achievements and scientific outlook (max. 2 pp)
  • 1 reference letter
  • PhD diploma copy/scan
